Exhibition - Ventura Centrale (initiative)
Studio ThusThat︎ reuses and detoxifies the byproduct of the aluminium production, aka. red mud, to produce ceramic tabelware. A two room exhibtion showcases the designs while communicating their mission of changing the perspective on industrial waste.
Year: 2019
Aluminium is a versatile and beautiful material. It can be associated with ‘shiny new things’, technologial advancements but also a huge idustry that produces tons of toxic waste each year that can destory whole cities.
The first part, a bar situation that offers drinks, illustrates a consuming, shiny ‘brave new world’. Lots of aluminium and lighting floors, a neat environment, an environment we dont like to see polluted.
Deceptively the bar just hides the 2nd part of the exhibition. A dark area with the floor covered by (detoxified) red mud and a LED roundel in the middle. Its displays the red mud landfill catastrophies outside, while the inside shows the process of transforming red mud into ceramics.
The undeceiving character of this exhibition comes into play by exiting the exhibition, carrying the red mud into the clean and delightful bar area leaving proof of the impact the aluminium industry has on this world.
Special thanks to Paco and Kevin
